About the castle

About Caernarfon Castle

Caernarfon Castle has commanded the mouth of the River Seiont since 1283, when Edward I and his military architect, Master James of St George, began one of the most ambitious building projects of medieval Europe. Within its banded stone walls, a future king was born, two princes were invested before the world, and Welsh rebellions broke against towers built to look indestructible. Join a guided tour to walk the King's Gate, climb the Eagle Tower, and hear the full story - from Roman fort to royal fortress to UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Read the Full History

History

Edward I ordered Caernarfon's construction in 1283, fresh from defeating the last native Welsh princes, and put Master James of St George in charge of the design. Building continued for 47 years and cost roughly ยฃ25,000 - a vast sum that dwarfed spending on castles like Dover. On 25 April 1284, Queen Eleanor gave birth here to the future Edward II, the first English Prince of Wales. The castle is cared for by Cadw, the Welsh Government's heritage service, today.

Access

Caernarfon Castle can mean a wait at the ticket desk in peak season, especially through July and August when coach tours from Liverpool, Chester, and Manchester all arrive within the same hour. Pre-booked guided tours skip that uncertainty - your tickets and meeting point are confirmed before you leave home, so you walk straight in.

Architecture & Layout

Caernarfon is built in two wards split by a cross-wall, with the King's Gate's six portcullises facing the town and the polygonal Eagle Tower, crowned with stone eagles, watching the Menai Strait. Bands of dark and pale stone run the full length of the walls - a deliberate echo of Constantinople's Theodosian Walls, chosen to link Edward I's new fortress to Roman imperial power.

"Our guide on the small-group tour from Holyhead knew exactly which spiral staircase gives the best view from the Eagle Tower, and didn't rush us through the King's Gate exhibits. We learned more about the 1969 investiture standing in the outer bailey than we would have from any plaque."

"The castle itself is something else, but be ready for a lot of uneven stone steps if you want to climb the towers - my knees noticed by the end. Worth it for the views over the Menai Strait, and our guide gave us plenty of breaks."

"I did the day trip from Manchester on my own and never felt out of place - the group was small enough that our guide answered every question I had about Edward II being born here. Caernarfon town itself was a nice bonus stop for lunch."
